Brandy Burch: Can Personalized Benefits Solve Healthcare Issues?

Brandy Burch, CEO and founder of Benefitbay, smiling confidently during the interview, sharing insights on personalized healthcare benefits and her entrepreneurial journey.

In this conversation, Brandy Burch, CEO and founder of Benefitbay, dives into the complexities of the U.S. healthcare system, the challenges it poses for both employers and employees, and how personalized benefits could be the game-changer many have been waiting for. Drawing from her personal experiences and years of professional insight, Burch highlights the limitations of traditional healthcare coverage and presents Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements (ICHRAs) as a solution that offers greater flexibility and choice.

The Challenges of U.S. Healthcare

Healthcare in the U.S. has long been a contentious issue, with many individuals and employers alike feeling burdened by high costs and limited access. Brandy Burch's journey into this space began from a very personal place. In 1999, when she found out she was pregnant, her joy quickly turned into financial stress due to healthcare coverage restrictions. “I had to pay the complete medical journey and the delivery of my little girl because there was a pre-existing condition clause,” she explains, recalling how this challenge drove her to find a solution that benefits families facing similar difficulties.

Even with the introduction of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which removed pre-existing condition clauses, U.S. healthcare still struggles with accessibility and affordability. "The average American is not seeking care; their children are not going for their preventative visits because they don’t have the $165 for that office visit," Brandy says, emphasizing how high deductibles and out-of-pocket costs prevent many from accessing essential care.

A New Solution: ICHRAs

Recognizing the inefficiencies in the traditional system, Brandy Burch became an advocate for Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements (ICHRAs), a new option that passed into U.S. law in 2020. ICHRAs shift the power back to employees, giving them more control over their healthcare choices while also offering a practical solution for employers looking to provide flexible and affordable benefits.

Brandy explains, "ICHRAs drive the consumer’s ability to have personal choice with the large investment employers and entrepreneurs are making in their teams’ benefits."

With this model, employees can choose their own healthcare plan, tailoring it to their personal needs rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach often imposed by employers. This, however, introduces a new set of challenges, as many employees may feel overwhelmed by the variety of plans and options.

The Role of Technology in Personalized Benefits

To mitigate this, Benefitbay has developed a software solution that simplifies the decision-making process for both brokers and employees. The tool helps brokers evaluate a range of plans to determine which options will be most beneficial for different employers, while also guiding employees through their healthcare choices.

“We came first at the front end of benefits purchasing and solving that solution,” Brandy says.

With the tool, employees can answer a set of personalized questions about their health needs and preferences, helping them make informed decisions. Whether someone is looking to utilize a Health Savings Account (HSA) or requires access to affordable zero-copay care, the software provides clarity. By leveraging technology, Benefitbay is not just disrupting the traditional benefits space but ensuring that employees feel supported rather than overwhelmed by their healthcare decisions.

Building a Culture of Education and Support

One of the cornerstones of Benefitbay's approach is education, both internally and externally. "Our culture at Benefitbay is one of education. Even for ourselves, we don’t know everything there is to solve here," Brandy shares. By creating an ecosystem that emphasizes continuous learning, Benefitbay not only helps employees navigate the healthcare landscape but also encourages its team members to grow and develop their own expertise. The company even covers the cost of continuing education credits and national health and life insurance exams for its employees, further reinforcing its commitment to education.

Brandy also stresses the importance of balance, particularly for single parents and executives who juggle family and career responsibilities. “It’s really tough to be an executive and a CEO of a new entity, especially when you’re a single parent," she notes, reflecting on her own journey as a single mom of six children. By fostering a flexible work culture, Benefitbay ensures that employees can find harmony between their professional and personal lives, something that is increasingly important in today’s workforce.
