"A few years ago, my dad called me one morning on his way to the hospital," James recalls. "I thought something had happened to my mom, but it turned out my dad was getting ready for open-heart surgery."


James’ father had suffered from aortic dissection, exacerbated by years of sedentary lifestyle and poor health management. This experience left James feeling helpless but determined. "In that moment, I resolved to create a company like Mighty Health to help people like my dad get back on their feet and become stronger and mightier than ever," he says.


Building a Socially Impactful Business


Mighty Health started simply, with a health coach who could text James’ father to answer basic health questions. Over time, the concept evolved into a comprehensive program offering joint-friendly exercises, personalized nutrition plans, and one-on-one support from health coaches.


"We realized that not only my dad but millions of other aging adults needed the same kind of help to get their health back on track," James explains.


The core philosophy of Mighty Health is centered around functionality.

"Yes, you may care about your high blood pressure or your blood sugar level, but ultimately, what matters in your day-to-day is how you feel," James asserts.

The focus on weight, mobility, and pain management has led to significant improvements for their members. On average, Mighty Health members lose 15 pounds, decrease their systolic blood pressure by 21 points, and improve their joint pain by 30%.


The Entrepreneurial Journey


James’ entrepreneurial spirit was kindled in his youth, growing up in the back of his parents’ computer hardware store. Despite the hardships his parents faced as immigrants from China, their determination inspired him. "Even though entrepreneurship was tough on my parents, I was excited to get into it," he shares.


His first venture, a marketing analytics platform called Encore, was started with his college friend Felipe. They faced numerous challenges, including living in a cockroach-infested entrepreneurship house and surviving on a minimal budget. "We thought $30,000 was an incredible amount of money and tried to stretch it as long as possible," James recalls. Their perseverance paid off when they sold Encore to Meltwater in 2015.


Mighty Health’s Vision


The vision for Mighty Health extends beyond immediate health improvements. James envisions the company becoming the go-to place for healthy living for those aged 50 and above. "Yes, you can go to the doctor or the hospital for certain needs, but we want Mighty Health to be the place you go to for everything else," he says.


The goal is to enable older adults to enjoy life to the fullest. "We have members who can now go on cruises, put on their shoes, and run after their grandkids," James highlights. This focus on functional improvement helps members take control of their health and enjoy a more energetic life.

James emphasizes the importance of persistence and problem-solving in entrepreneurship.

"Entrepreneurship is often just putting one foot in front of the other," he says.

"I want to help entrepreneurs like myself start socially impactful businesses to solve problems they see in the world, in their community, and in their own lives," he states.
