Britt Gottschalk: How Can Data Change Healthcare?

Updated: Oct 13

Britt Gottschalk, the CEO of Genome, in podcast interview discussing health data innovation.

In a recent episode of our podcast, we had the pleasure of hosting Britt Gottschalk, the visionary founder and CEO of Geno.Me. This platform is pioneering a new approach to managing health data, advocating for patient ownership and compensating individuals for sharing their information. Throughout our conversation, Britt shared insights into her entrepreneurial journey, the complexities of healthcare data, and how leveraging personal health information could transform clinical research and patient outcomes.

The Genesis of Geno.Me

Britt Gottschalk's journey into entrepreneurship wasn't a straight path. With a background in psychology and a dual master's in business administration and industrial organizational psychology, Britt initially ventured into management consulting. She navigated the challenging landscapes of healthcare, finance, and insurance, where she honed her skills in process improvement and project management. Her experiences with data accessibility in healthcare sparked the idea for Geno.Me.

"I myself was probably a little bit insane because who becomes an entrepreneur? It's the people that are crazy," Britt humorously reflects on her decision to start her own business.

The frustration with existing processes and the drive to make a significant impact were the catalysts for her leap into founding Geno.Me.

Bridging Gaps in Health Data

One of the core challenges in today's healthcare industry is the fragmentation of data across different systems. Britt explained the motivation behind Geno.Me:

"We connect electronic medical records with genetic and genomic reports and allow our users, our contributors, to share that data with the populations that can do the most with it."

This integration addresses a critical gap, ensuring that valuable health data reaches research institutions and pharmaceutical companies more efficiently.

The transparency and control Geno.Me offers to individuals over their health data are groundbreaking. As Britt stated, "Data transparency is so important when it comes to advancing medical outcomes in the clinical research space... We make that simple."

The Role of Compensation in Data Sharing

A unique aspect of Geno.Me's business model is the compensation it offers to users for their data. This approach not only incentivizes data sharing but also respects the rights of individuals as the rightful owners of their information. "So not only are you helping accelerate and promote a change that could be groundbreaking and life-saving, but you're also getting compensated for it for what's rightfully yours," said Britt, highlighting the dual benefits of their platform.

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead

Starting and scaling a business, especially in a field as complex as healthcare technology, comes with its set of challenges. Britt's initial venture during the pandemic taught her the importance of resilience and adaptability—lessons she carried into founding Geno.Me. "These were all things that I was looking at as an experiment," she mentioned about her early struggles and learning curve in the consulting world.

The future looks promising for Geno.Me, with plans for substantial growth in their contributor base. "We're hoping that towards the end of the year, early next year, we're looking at about 50,000 to 100,000 contributors," Britt shared, indicating the potential scale of impact their platform aims to achieve.

Conclusion: The Power of Data in Shaping Healthcare

Britt Gottschalk's story is more than just a tale of business success; it's about how visionary ideas can lead to practical solutions that empower individuals and enhance healthcare outcomes. Geno.Me stands at the forefront of a significant shift towards more transparent, equitable, and beneficial use of health data.

For anyone interested in the intersection of technology and healthcare, Britt’s journey offers valuable lessons on innovation, perseverance, and the transformative power of data in healthcare. As Geno.Me continues to grow, it will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of medical research and patient care.
