What does it take to reclaim your identity, break free from societal norms, and live life on your terms? For Rugare Gomo, a high-performance business and leadership coach, the answer lies in embracing self-discovery, bold commitments, and the courage to take action, even when the odds are stacked against you.

Born in Zimbabwe and raised in a world filled with limiting beliefs, Rugare’s journey to freedom is a testament to the transformative power of resilience. At 16, he left his homeland with nothing more than a suitcase, $300, and a dream, determined to carve a new path for himself in Australia. His story offers invaluable lessons for anyone seeking to overcome personal or societal barriers and lead a life of purpose.

The Power of Asking, "Who Am I?"

From an early age, Rugare recognized the weight of societal expectations. "The moment I was born, the world was telling me who I should and shouldn’t be," he reflects. Whether it was being told he didn’t belong due to his upbringing or feeling stifled by Zimbabwe’s rigid education system, Rugare knew something had to change.

His defining moment came when he asked a bold question: Who is Rugare Gomo? This question marked the start of his journey to freedom, pushing him to challenge norms and pursue opportunities that aligned with his true self.

Defying Expectations: From Zimbabwe to Australia

At just 14 years old, Rugare secretly reached out to a family friend in Australia, hoping for a chance to study abroad. "I didn’t tell my parents because I was scared society and family norms would be in my way," he admits. The friend, whom he calls Uncle Andrew, agreed to help, offering Rugare a place to stay and securing him a partial scholarship.

This bold move marked the beginning of a life-changing journey. Arriving in Australia was a cultural shock—dishwashers, dedicated internet, and classrooms where teachers encouraged independent thought were all foreign to him. But these challenges fueled his growth.

"I had to figure out, who am I? What actually are my thoughts? Because nobody had ever asked, who is Rugare Gomo?"

Breaking Barriers and Embracing Bold Commitments

Rugare’s time in university was fraught with obstacles. As Zimbabwe experienced a devastating economic collapse, he faced the harsh reality of funding his education abroad. "As an 18-year-old boy, I raised over $120,000 over six years to go to university," he shares.

This journey taught him invaluable lessons about resilience and the importance of taking action.

"I didn’t wait to be confident to raise the money—it was raising the money that gave me confidence," Rugare explains.

His determination didn’t end there. After graduating with a double degree in Arts and Law, he faced another challenge: finding work as an international student in Australia. Despite systemic barriers, he worked his way up in a law firm, starting in the mailroom before becoming a paralegal.

"I wasn’t going to be held back by the limitations the world was placing on me," he asserts.

The Cost of Comfort and the Commitment to Freedom

A recurring theme in Rugare’s story is the cost of staying comfortable. He challenges his clients to reflect on what they might be sacrificing by not pursuing their true selves.

"Anytime I don’t live my true self, it’s costing me my happiness, my income, my joy," he says.

However, he also acknowledges the fear of discomfort: "Sometimes in life, we just want to feel safe and avoid the unknown."

For Rugare, true freedom comes from committing to a goal greater than one’s identity and taking consistent action toward it.

Key Takeaways for Your Journey

  1. Ask the Right Questions: Start by asking, "Who am I?" and "What do I truly want?" This self-awareness is the foundation of transformation.

  2. Embrace Bold Commitments: Confidence comes from action, not the other way around. As Rugare says, "Once I am committed to the game, that is what changes me."

  3. Recognize the Cost of Staying Comfortable: Evaluate what staying in your comfort zone is costing you in terms of happiness, growth, and opportunity.

  4. Take Consistent Action: "It’s inside of the action that you become a person you never imagined yourself to be," Rugare emphasizes.

Conclusion

Rugare Gomo’s journey from Zimbabwe to Australia is a powerful reminder that freedom and purpose start with a willingness to question the status quo and take bold action. By challenging limiting beliefs and committing to a path aligned with your true self, you too can forge a life of freedom and fulfillment.
